Recovery after implant surgery

Swelling, bruising and some discomfort in the first days are expected. A soft diet, rest and follow-up visits are standard; the final teeth go on after the bone has bonded to the implant.

The first days

AAOMS states that some discomfort, swelling and bruising at the surgical site is normal after implant surgery.1 Over-the-counter pain relievers may be recommended.1 AAOMS advises avoiding strenuous exercise and physical activity after surgery.1

Eating

AAOMS states that a soft diet is usually recommended during the early stages of healing.1 The ADA lists soft foods, cold foods and warm soup during healing.2

Cleaning the area

The surgeon gives specific instructions for gentle brushing, mouthwash and cleaning the surgical site.1

Healing stages

PeriodWhat happens
First days to weeksBone and surrounding tissue begin to heal1
Several monthsNew bone cells grow and attach to the implant (osseointegration)1
After integrationThe final crown or bridge is placed once the implant has bonded and the gum tissue has matured1

The ADA states that some patients wait until the implant is completely integrated, up to several months, before replacement teeth are attached.2 The FDA states that it may take weeks or months for the mouth to heal before the permanent crown is placed.3 Some patients receive a temporary tooth or bridge on the day of surgery; see the topic on immediate loading.4

Follow-up visits

AAOMS states that regular follow-up appointments let the surgeon monitor healing and check implant stability.1

After sedation

AAOMS states that the pre-operative visit reviews how the patient is likely to feel after anesthesia, and that medication may be prescribed for comfort at home.5

When to call the office

The FDA lists infection, numbness, and a loose or twisting feeling among the risks of implant treatment.3 Any of these should be reported to the treating dentist.
